2 Samuel

Chapter 10

1 AFTER this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

2 Then said David, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him for his father. And David's servants came to the land of the Ammonites.

3 And the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, Do you think that David is honoring your father, that he has sent comforters to you? Has not David rather sent his servants to you to spy out the city and to explore it and to overthrow it?

4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants and shaved off the one-half of their beards and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 When they told it to David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed; and the king said to them, Tarry at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.

6 And when the Ammonites saw that they had acted foolishly toward David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Arameans of the son of Rehob and the Arameans of the son of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacah a thousand men and of Ish-tob twelve thousand footmen.

7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.

8 And the Ammonites came out and set their men in battle array at the entrance of the gate of Edom the son of Rehob; and the forces of Aram the son of Zobah and Ish-tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.

9 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in the front and in the rear, he selected the choice men of Israel and put them in array against Aram;

10 And the rest of the people he placed in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he put them in array against the Ammonites.

11 And he said to Abishai his brother, If the Arameans prove too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites prove too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

12 Be of good courage, and let us fight for the sake of our people and for the sake of the cities of our God: and the LORD will do what is good in his sight.

13 And Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Arameans, and they fled before him.

14 And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, then they fled also before Abishai and entered into the city. So Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.

15 And when the Arameans saw that they were defeated before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

16 And Hadarezer sent and brought out the Arameans that were beyond the river Euphrates; and they came to Helam; and Shobach the general of Hadarezer's army went before them.

17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. And the Arameans set themselves in array against David, and David fought against them.

18 And the Arameans fled before Israel; and David destroyed one thousand and seven hundred chariots of the Arameans and slew four thousand horsemen and a great many of the people, and he smote Shobach the general of their army, who died there.

19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadarezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans feared to help the Ammonites any more.

1 Und310 es begab sich danach, daß der König4428 der Kinder1121 Ammon5983 starb4191; und sein Sohn1121 Hanon2586 ward König4427 an seiner Statt.

2 Da sprach559 David1732: Ich will935 Barmherzigkeit2617 tun6213 an3027 Hanon2586, dem Sohn1121 Nahas5176, wie sein Vater1 an mir Barmherzigkeit2617 getan6213 hat. Und sandte hin und ließ7971 ihn1732 trösten5162 durch seine Knechte5650 über seinen Vater1. Da nun die Knechte5650 Davids1732 ins Land776 der Kinder1121 Ammon5983 kamen,

3 sprachen559 die Gewaltigen8269 der Kinder1121 Ammon5983 zu ihrem Herrn113 Hanon2586: Meinest du, daß5668 David1732 deinen Vater1 ehre3513 vor deinen Augen5869, daß er1732 Tröster5162 zu dir gesandt7971 hat? Meinest du nicht, daß er darum hat seine Knechte5650 zu dir gesandt7971, daß er die Stadt5892 erforsche2713 und erkunde7270 und umkehre2015?

4 Da nahm3947 Hanon2586 die Knechte5650 Davids1732 und beschor ihnen den Bart2206 halb2677 und schnitt ihnen die Kleider4063 halb2677 ab3772 bis an den Gürtel8357 und ließ7971 sie gehen.

5 Da das David1732 ward angesagt5046, sandte er ihnen entgegen7125; denn die Männer582 waren sehr3966 geschändet3637. Und der König4428 ließ7971 ihnen sagen559: Bleibet3427 zu Jericho3405, bis euer Bart2206 gewachsen6779, so kommt dann wieder7725.

6 Da aber die Kinder1121 Ammon5983 sahen7200, daß sie7936 vor David1732 stinkend887 waren worden, sandten sie505 hin und1121 dingeten die Syrer758 des7971 Hauses Rehob1050 und die Syrer758 zu Zoba6678, zwanzigtausend6242 Mann376 Fußvolks, und von dem König4428 Maacha tausend505 Mann376 und von Istob zwölftausend Mann.

7 Da das8085 David1732 hörete, sandte7971 er Joab3097 mit dem ganzen Heer6635 der Kriegsleute1368.

8 Und die Kinder1121 Ammon5983 zogen aus3318 und rüsteten sich6186 zum Streit4421 vor der Tür6607 des Tors8179. Die Syrer758 aber von Zoba6678, von Rehob7340, von Istob und von Maacha4601 waren allein905 im Felde7704.

9 Da Joab3097 nun sah7200, daß der Streit4421 auf6440 ihn7125 gestellet war, vorne und hinten268, erwählete er aus aller jungen Mannschaft977 in6440 Israel3478 und rüstete sich6186 wider die Syrer758.

10 Und das übrige3499 Volk5971 tat5414 er unter die Hand3027 seines Bruders251 Abisai52, daß er sich6186 rüstete wider7125 die Kinder1121 Ammon5983;

11 und sprach559: Werden mir die Syrer758 überlegen sein2388, so komm mir zu Hilfe3444; werden aber die Kinder1121 Ammon5983 dir überlegen sein, so will1980 ich2388 dir zu Hilfe3467 kommen.

12 Sei getrost2388 und laß uns stark2388 sein für unser Volk5971 und für die Städte5892 unsers Gottes430; der HErr3068 aber tue6213, was2896 ihm gefällt5869!

13 Und Joab3097 machte sich herzu5066 mit dem Volk5971, das bei ihm war, zu streiten4421 wider die Syrer758; und sie flohen5127 vor6440 ihm.

14 Und da die Kinder1121 Ammon5983 sahen7200, daß die Syrer758 flohen5127, flohen5127 sie auch vor6440 Abisai52 und zogen935 in die Stadt5892. Also kehrete Joab3097 um7725 von den Kindern1121 Ammon5983 und kam935 gen Jerusalem3389.

15 Und da die Syrer758 sahen7200, daß sie geschlagen5062 waren622 vor6440 Israel3478, kamen sie zuhauf3162.

16 Und3318 Hadadeser1928 sandte hin und5104 brachte935 heraus7971 die Syrer758 jenseit5676 des Wassers und führete herein ihre Macht2431; und Sobach7731, der Feldhauptmann8269 Hadadesers1928, zog vor6440 ihnen her.

17 Da das David1732 ward622 angesagt5046, sammelte622 er zuhauf das ganze Israel3478 und zog5674 über den Jordan3383 und kam935 gen Helam2431. Und die Syrer758 rüsteten sich6186 wider7125 David1732, mit ihm zu streiten3898.
